International and internal migration

In 2012, 351,000 people immigrated to Italy, compared to 386,000 people who immigrated during the previous year.

The decline in immigration is mainly due to the decrease in the number of foreign immigrants (from 354,000 in 2011 to 321,000 in 2012). In the same year, also the number of Italian immigrants shows a decrease, from 31,000 to 29,000.

Among immigrants, the largest number of entries are counted for Romanian (82,000), Chinese (20,000), Moroccans (20,000) and Albanese (14,000) nationals.

A decrease was registered for immigrants with Moldavian (-41% fewer than in the previous year), Ukrainian (-36%), Peruvian (-35%) and Ecuadorian (-27%) nationals. On the other hand increases were seen for immigrants with African citizenships (+1,2%) and for those nationalities which experienced military conflicts in the Country of origin, such as Nigeria, Pakistan, Mali and Ivory Coast.

During 2012, 106,000 emigrants left the Country, a number higher than the one of the previous year, when 82,000 people emigrated. The fall in immigration and the rise of emigration drove a decrease in net migration (+245,000 in 2012, compared to +303,000 in the previous year).

The increase in emigration is mainly due to the rise in the number of national emigrants (from 50,000 in 2011 to 68,000 in 2012). In the same year, also the number of foreign emigrants shows an increase from 32,000 to 38,000.

Germany, Switzerland, United Kingdom and France were the top countries for emigration of nationals in 2012.
More than 25% of over 24 nationals who emigrated (53,000) were graduated.
