  • Micro.Stat: 1. First steps in statistics; 2. Istatmicrodata: initiative to promote statistical literacy for mathematics teachers; it is divided over six days and conducted in partnership by the Istat regional office for Veneto, the Regional Education Office and Mathesis - Italian Society of Mathematical and Physical Sciences (Rovigo, 22 September 2014).
  • Workshop Promoting statistical literacy: projects and innovations promoted by Istat regional network, to share the actions implemented by the School and the Istat Regional Offices and to anticipate future scenarios and strategies (Rome, 25 June 2014).
  • Statistical reasoning to discern. Training initiative in six modules organized by the Istat regional office for Liguria and the Advanced School, in cooperation with the University of Genoa and the Ministry of Education.   • Refresher training programme for teachers of LES (social-economic high schools), in collaboration with the Rosselli Foundation, through two webinars titled “Statistics or statistical literacy in LES?” (6 and 11 November 2013).
  • Summer Camp (2011 and 2012) . Design of training modules as part of the events organized by Aistap (Italian Association for Gifted and Talented Children), with the aim of developing initiatives for gifted students.
  • Four training initiatives (in Milan, Naples, Vicenza, Rome), in collaboration with the Italian section of 'AEEE (Association on European Economic Education). The school has edited a module dedicated to statistics, involving about 400 teachers of social-economic high schools (March-April 2012).
  • Area NuoveGenerazioni, space dedicated to children and young people during the 11th National Conference of Statistics (Rome, 20-21 February 2013).

Teaching materials

  • Statistics for examples is an attempt to explain the use of statistics, information gathering and data representation through examples of daily life, such as reading newspapers, football matches, athletics, the value of money.
  • Introduction to statistics with Excel offers some tutorials on using Excel for analysis and data representations. Goal is to provide the ability to approach statistical data with a critical attitude.
  • The value of data is a hypertext designed to help anyone who has an interest in the use of numbers to make the best use of statistics. It can be used in a systematic way by students and teachers interested in exploring the practical application of statistics.
  • ScuolaConoscenzaQualità (School, Knowledge, Quality) is a pilot project designed for high schools in which a team of students, trained in special meetings with the Istat staff, was responsible for conducting a survey of the entire school population with a questionnaire aimed to know the world of the young (behaviors, values, habits etc.).

Contests and prizes

  • ISLP Poster Competition 2014-2015, international competition for statistical poster. The National Committee has declared Italian winner the poster realized by students Carlo Chiusi, Gioia Raffoni and Francesca Tamburri of the social-economic high school “S. Umiltà” of Faenza (RA), under the coordination of prof. Roberta Zuffa. The fulfilled the criteria previously established for the final judgement by the International Board, and it was clear, analytic and nicely presented.
  • Statistical Olympiad. Competition organized by the Italian Statistical Society (SIS) in collaboration with the Italian National Institute of Statistics. The 5th edition of the competition is aimed at students of the 4th and 5th years of the upper secondary school. Further information available on SIS website.
  • 4th contest "The Local Development I would like: equitable and sustainable", promoted by Articolo Novantanove- Associazione dei già Consiglieri CNEL (Article Ninety Nine- Association of Councillors already CNEL) in partnership with ANP (Associazione Nazionale dirigenti e alte professionalità della scuola – National Association executives and high professionalism of the school).
  • "Let's do statistics!": the contest winners come from the whole national territory; the contest is aimed at lower secondary schools, and it is promoted by Istat/Advanced School for Statistics and Socio-economic Analyses and Giovanni Agnelli Foundation, with the sponsorship of the Bank of Italy.
  • "Statistics-Lab: a discovery!" Here are the winners of the contest dedicated to upper secondary schools. The Selection Board, consisting of representatives of the three competition promoters (ISTAT, Italian Statistical Society and Casio Italy Srl), has compiled the winner list:
    • 1st place. Class 2A ITAS "Luigi Perdisa" (Ravenna)
    • 2nd place. Class 2B of the Liceo classico "TerenzioMamiani" (Pesaro)
    • 3rd place. Class 2E of ITS "Tito Acerbo" (Pescara)

    Category B (third and fourth classes): 1st and only winner Class 3C of Liceo classico "Terenzio Mamiani" (Pesaro)
    Special mention to the video designed and performed by the Class 4A of ITT "Giuseppe Mazzotti" (Treviso), which the jury found original and valuable.

  • ISPL Poster Competition 2012-2013

Projects carried out on occasion of the Population Census

  • Section dedicated to experiences in schools on occasion of the 15th Population Census. Materials are still usable to replicate the experience of a statistical survey.
  • Project Census at school, with the publication of Census and Tatzi: a’statistical fantasy story’ implemented in primary and lower secondary schools during the censuses of 2001 by Istat and the Italian Statistical Society, in agreement with the Ministry of Education and the Italian Mathematical Union.
